The number of tour operators in Uganda and Rwanda keeps on increasing each day; in fact every month, new tour operators open their doors. Your choice of a tour operator has a great effect on the success of your journey. I know every tourist’s dream is to get the best out of their trip: everyone wants by the end of the journey to go back home and narrate memorable stories about their trip. Having said that Imagine you are on your computer and you type in google let say “gorilla tour booking” or “gorilla trekking in Uganda” ; I believe you shall receive lots of results of Uganda tour operators. With these big numbers of tour operators, how do you determine which tour operator to choose for your journey?
Here are some of the factors you need to consider.
Reviews.
Reviews are basically testimonies about the travellers’ experience about their journey. In Uganda tourism industry, there are places to consider when checking out for those reviews. These are trip advisor and safaribooking. Tripadvisor and safaribooking are travel websites that offer many services to tour operator but one of the notable service is the ability for their travellers to write reviews about their company. Knowing that almost every tour operator in Uganda is listed on these sites, you should check out reviews about traveller who have used such tour operators. A good tour operator should have at least 15 reviews however you should read through the reviews to get a better understanding of most the traveller’s experience. While you are reading through these reviews, sometimes you have to use personal judgment especially on reviews which depict complaints. A bad experience of some traveller may not necessary have been due to the company’s fault; it may just be some other external conditions or probably the travellers’ problem. Keep in mind that there are some situations that are out of a company’s control. For example, the political climate and weather; I have seen situations where the traveller was promised to use a certain guide in the company, let say, James. And at the end of the day, another guide Robert shows up. Sometimes such simple details are somehow understandable because may be James could have fallen of a certain illness and was unable to make it for the trip.
Check out their social media presence.
The social media is now used to show the popularity and trust that people have in a brand. For those established brands they know the importance of social media. Check out the company’s Facebook, twitter, and google+ accounts. On their social media page, check out the number of likes or number of people following them up. Look out their social engagement, like how regularly they post content on their social pages. I would go with a company with lots of likes and has a good social engagement. It just represents the company’s commitment to its users and therefore, I’m certain that I shall be catered for.
Their website.
A website is a virtual representation of a company. By looking at a company’s website, there are so many conclusions you can make about a company. A company’s internal organization can virtually be seen with their website. A good website interface to me would show me that the company is somehow organized, and the content on the website, would determine how informed the company is. A good company always has all the content that you are looking for. For example, how can book with bird watching safari with a tour operator that has no or little content about bird watching?
Easy communication.
Easy communication with the tour operator is really vital aspect. If you send an inquiry, how long does it take for you to be responded. Great companies respond promptly at least within 24 hours. And during this conversation, you shall ask several questions, and the kind of answers you receive shall give you the confidence about the company.
Means of payment.
When it comes to payment, ensure that you send money your money to a company account, it is not advisable at all costs to send money to a personal account. Check out to see if the name of the company truly corresponds to the name of the account. It is worth noting that many times the domain name of the company, www.example.com, may not correlate with the company’s name. This is 100% acceptable since domain names are normally chosen with search engine optimization in mind.
Price range of your tour.
Always read through your itinerary to ensure that they fall within your budget. You should go for activities that are within your budget. The prices always differ depending on whether you are a budget traveller, midrange traveller, or a luxury traveller. This is what determines the kind of transportation you are going to use, the lodging you are going to be provided, and simple extra detailed service that you shall expect.
Word of mouth.
We all know sources that we trust like our friends. If they recommend us something, many times we go by their choice. If you know people of have travelled to Uganda, and they recommended you a tour operator then choose that one.
Follow your instinct.
Sometimes our instincts or what we feel is right beats common sense and all the analytics that we might have considered. If you know it in your heart that this is the best tour operator for you, then choose them. This is necessary because even a newly registered tour operator might be ready to offer you the best services so that you act as their referral. Remember at one time, every company was starting. If all people who travelled with such company considered all these factors, I guess we wouldn’t have any tour operator in operation today. Sometimes, you just have to go with your heart.
