Kampala city is regarded as the capital city of Uganda.
It is named after animals called the ‘impalas’ which are now found
in Lake Mburo National park. The impalas are middle- sized African Antelopes.
The City is home to over 2 million people with the city
divided into five divisions: Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa
Division, Lubaga Division, and Kampala Central division.
Kampala Central division.
This is the business center of the city with most
business offices and other commercial interest buildings. Nakasero hill
is the home of Kampala central division. Most business around the city
is selling merchandises like clothes, bags, and others. The city is
moderately planned with some buildings and streets specifically meant
for special types of businesses. For example, Energy center building
and Kiyembe lane is known for selling Electronics and electrical accessories;
Some parts of kampala road like Mabirizi plaza are known for selling
computers and accessories; Nasser road is known for printing, and a
newly constructed building has been named printers’ miracle center
just to showcase what miracles the printer has performed to the business
people in this area; Kisekka market is known for car parts and accessories.
One of the notable lanes is the kikuubo lane where you find all sorts
of merchandise. People in this area sell at both wholesale and retail
prices. Most business people from Kikuubo import their products which
are then sold at both retail and whole prices. Everyone loves this lane
and many believe that it is where find Kampala’s rich people. One
of the things that I found out about the city is that 90 percent of
the buildings within the central business district are actually owned
by Ugandans who normally name these building after their own names.
There are pretty amazing names on the list: both men and female. This
has given the young one or those who are working their way to the top
a lot of hope because they believe that if other Ugandans have made
it, them too can make it. This is true because some of stories behind
these rich people are astonishing and courageous.
Life in the city is so amazing. It’s all about how
much you have in your pockets. In Kampala, you can choose to live as
luxurious as you would wish to live and at the same time as moderate
as you could afford. For those in the middle and upper class, there
are restaurants, hotels, clothing boutiques, and residential areas that
can fully accommodate their life style. And for the moderate people,
they have theirs too. However there are festivals that unite all people
of all sorts of walks:
Kampala city festival, this is an annual festival
that occurs toward that the end of the year where people come together
to celebrate the city. The festival is organized by the Kampala City
Authority, an authority that administers the city.
MTN marathon: this marathon is organized by MTN,
a telecommunication company, where the funds are obtained from the marathon
goes towards a certain public cause.
Kabaka Marathon: this marathon commemorates the Kings’
birthday.
Bayimba International Festival of music and art-this
showcase the Uganda’s best music, dance, and theater plus many more.
For those that love tourist attractions there are
many around the city:
Kasubi tombs-this is a burial ground for four kabakas,
kings of Buganda, and other members of the Buganda royal family.
Uganda Museum- displays natural historical and traditional
collections of Uganda’s culture.
Lubaga cathedral- this is one of the historical cathedrals
in the city which is located on Lubaga hill.
Gadaffi National Mosque-This is a beautiful mosque
located at Kampala Hill in Old Kampala.
The other divisions in the city are mainly residential
areas with not so much business activities as the central division.
