Among the Baganda, as it is among some other African ethnic
groups, there are specific names assigned to the twins themselves and this
naming depends on birth order. The firstborn twin name is 'Wasswa' for the male
and 'Babirye' (Bah bee ree yeh) for the female. For the second-born, 'Nakato'
is to the female and 'Kato' (Kah Toe) for the male version.
Special gifts are considered to the parents of these twins
because of such a blessing to them. This derives the title of 'Ssalongo' to the
father and 'Nalongo' to the mother once twins are born.
Their birth should be followed by serious cultural activities
in their ancestoral homes together with their living relatives (Clan members).
This is believed to make the twins strong people of a great legacy of their
respective clans over others. Contrally to this, the twins together with its
family members cease to have peace forever. This is called 'Okuzazza Abalongo'
in the Buganda local language meaning 'Making twins born.'
Majority claim older twins are usually hyper. Younger twins
(Nakato or Kato) have the reputation of being sanguine and quiet. It is also
believed in the Kabaka land that twins should never be separated from each
other forexample living in different homesteads until they mature enough to
adult understanding.
Another entertaining moment comes when the twins die, because
according to the Buganda culture, it should be stated in someone's speech that
they have 'Flown' instead of 'Died'
Twins among the Buganda are uniformly pampered despite them
having different physical and mental capabilities.
However, one would then pose a question concerning cases of
more than two twins, yes this is likely to be the same this side too.
We shall keep you posted
